Location in France
The center of an urban area of more than 100,000 inhabitants, Chambéry is situated between the Bauges massif and the Chartreuse mountain range, in the cluse that bears its name. To the south the town stretches out to the vineyards on the hillsides of the Combe of Savoie ; to the north it almost reaches the shores of Lake Bourget, France's largest natural lake. In former centuries the growth of Chambéry was closely related to the fortune of the House of Savoie, one of Europe's oldest ruling families dating from the 11th century. From 1295 to 1563 the Savoies elected the town as their capital mainly because of its situation at he crossroads of the Alpine traffic between France, Italy and Switzerland. Nowadays with the setting up of the French-Italian company "Lyon-Turin Ferroviaire" in charge of the international part of the route Chambéry is the hub of the new Lyon-Turin rail link project . Communication facilities are at the root of Chambéry's sound economic resources. Traditionally an administrative and commercial center, the town has taken advantage of the surge connected with the 1992 Winter Olympics of Albertville and of Savoie to strengthen its position and assert its role as Alpine heartland of Europe. Enjoying both the benefits of the quality of life of a human-sized city and of equipments worthy of a large city, Chambéry is today deliberately looking to the future. This is attested, for instance, by the establishment of the International Research and Development Center of Vétrotex (Saint-Gobain group), as well as by the development of the technological park of Savoie Technolac, the emergence of an environmental area of activity, or by its young University of Savoie attracting an ever increasing number of students from all over the world and setting up a Mountain Studies Institute.
