Location in France

Today, Roubaix is the second largest city in the North Pas-de-Calais region with nearly 100.000 inhabitants. Powered by a vast cultural diversity, proud of its industrial past, and rich in innovative initiatives, it can be said that Roubaix is a daring, surprising and appealing city. In Roubaix, building alterations has definitely become an art : former textile factories now house entrepreneurs, students, dancers, artists, lofters … and the Condition Publique, a place where once wool was processed, has become a cultural community centre where culture is displayed in all possible forms. Roubaix has even gone so far as to install the museum collections in a former art deco public swimming pool : undoubtedly a successful move as since it opened in 2001, the Swimming Pool - André Diligent Museum of Arts and Industry has welcomed a million visitors to admire the former shower cubicles transformed into exhibition display windows. Not only was this industrial heritage’s reconversion successful, but also, Roubaix became the first city around Lille to receive the coveted label of “City of Arts and History” in 2001, proof of an original and quality heritage. Roubaix is also surprising with its pruned green areas, such as the Barbeiux Park, one of the largest urban parks north of Paris. In 2002, it was awarded the National Grand Tree Prize and, since 2003, has proudly carried the label of 4 flowers (“4 fleurs”). At one time Roubaix was the undisputed centre for textile manufacturing, but it has now been replaced by distance selling and textile creation. The area situated between the train station and the Museum of Art and Industry is now solely dedicated to fashion. Young fashion designers and interior decorators have set up shop in these boutiques, now called the workshops of the Quartier des Modes (Fashion District). All these original concepts reinforce this city’s appeal which was the first to welcome factory outlet stores with the creation, in 1984, of the European shopping centre A l’Usine, joined in 1999 by McArthur. With 170 designer manufacturer and factory outlet stores along with the Fashion District, Roubaix is a fully-fledged shopping destination. And don’t forget its numerous professional and amateur dance companies ! Roubaix is a real dance centre where all sorts of contemporary dance can be seen. Since 2005, a great name in dance has come to join the Roubaix dance world – the famous dancer and choreographer Carolyn Carlson is now the Director of the former Ballets du Nord and she has also opened the Centre Chorégraphique National Roubaix–Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
